Optical Drills by Dynamic High-Order Bessel Beam Mixing

One of the key trends in laser material processing is usage structured beams. Collimated and focused Gaussian beams are most common tools; however, more exotic can be beneficial too. For instance, Bessel with elongated focal area self-healing properties, or vortex helical wave fronts a dark along optical axis being increasingly used. Here, we propose experimentally demonstrate dynamical ``optical drill'' presenting nonstationary intensity distributions that resemble spinning mechanical drill. Optical drills appear as spatiotemporal interference two Bessel-vortex different topological charges carrier frequencies. By mixing pair high-order beams, synthesized using liquid crystal spatial light modulator, tuned helicities observed, simplest cases matter (fluorescence) such demonstrated. drill expected to useful by cell particle manipulation biomedical applications.
